American Heart Month, observed every February, raises awareness of the leading cause of death in the United States: heart disease. Individuals are encouraged to learn their risk factors, adopt heart-healthy habits and recognize the symptoms of heart-related conditions. American Heart Month also highlights the critical role that cardiovascular professionals play in improving outcomes and saving lives.
A passion for cardiology – Clinton Timmerman, DO

OSU Medical Center cardiology fellow Clinton Timmerman, DO, was drawn to the field by a personal motivation to help those affected by heart disease and a fascination with the heart as an electromechanical pump.
After completing his internal medicine residency at Carilion Clinic – Virginia Tech, Dr. Timmerman was attracted to OSUMC’s Cardiology Fellowship program for its clinical autonomy and the diverse patient population.
OSUMC’s fellowship emphasizes hands-on learning and independence. Fellows are expected to function as junior attendings, providing direct bedside care and performing procedures in the Cath Lab – an approach that has shaped Dr. Timmerman’s day-to-day training.
Improving patient outcomes
One clinical experience reinforced his decision to pursue cardiology. “A patient came in experiencing shortness of breath after recently being discharged with significant heart failure,” said Dr. Timmerman. “The patient became quite ill, entered cardiogenic shock and required several medications and placement of a pulmonary artery catheter to assist with low heart function. We were able to discharge the patient within a week, and they remain very thankful for their care.”
Dr. Timmerman notes that coronary artery disease and atrial fibrillation are often underestimated by patients. “By the time symptoms such as chest pain or shortness of breath appear, intervention is often required,” he said. Regarding atrial fibrillation, he added, “We are increasingly recognizing that it has been underdiagnosed and undertreated for decades.”
Looking ahead
Dr. Timmerman’s fellowship has reinforced his interest in the heart’s electrical system. During American Heart Month, his work serves as a reminder of the importance of awareness, prevention and timely care. Be sure to prioritize your heart health and commit to recognizing potential symptoms.
